THE DORMITORY SYSTEM IN TURKIYE

In Turkiye, there are 2 types of dormitories for University students; the government and the private. The government dormitories are under the Turkish government and the Ministry of Youth and Sport(GSB) and generally referred to as KYK. There are 6 different types of KYK dormitories which are identified based on their features, size of the rooms, the number of people each room can accommodate, the toilet and bathroom features. Type 1 is the most affordable in terms of price and the deposit/ down payment. The type 1 dormitory is typically 4-6 people rooms, general use toilets and bathrooms, study tables in rooms, internet, bookshelf, breakfast and dinner, canteen and sitting room. The type 2 provides the students’ basic accommodation, food and security needs.

Type 3 is the average level Kyk dormitory in Turkiye and the room sizes range from 2-4 people rooms. The rooms have reading tables, refrigerators and some have bookshelves. Toilets and bathrooms may be central use. The type 4 dormitories have similar features with the type 3. Type 5 dormitories are the second best dormitories which makes the dormitory fees and deposits the second most expensive. These dormitories cover all the needs of the students. The most luxurious and most expensive are the type 6 dormitories which also cover the basic needs of the students.

International students can also apply to live in government dormitories within the period of their university year. After graduation, students are expected to leave. In contrast to these, private dormitories are more needs based. That is,students do not necessarily have to be undergraduates before they can be accommodated.
