I woke up one day and realized something about myself I naturally value cooperation and togetherness. It wasn’t something I developed overnight; in fact, it happened so gradually that I wasn’t even aware of it. Looking back, the small things I did helping out, showing up, supporting others were all unconscious acts. I never thought too deeply about them; they just felt natural.
I’ve never really been the kind of person who rushes to lead. I only step up when no one else is willing, and it usually happens in situations that call for unity or group effort. What I genuinely enjoy is supporting others whether it’s a class project, a community initiative, or just helping someone figure things out. I find joy in being part of something bigger than myself. Wherever I go, I like to have a sense of belonging. That feeling of being connected to others, of being part of a team is what drives me. Maybe that’s why, even as an international student, I find comfort in building small pockets of community and togetherness wherever I am.
Being an international student is a big adventure new culture, new people, new challenges. But with all the excitement come moments of loneliness, homesickness, and feeling like an outsider. That’s where community and togetherness come in.
Surrounding yourself with people who grew up in the same environment as you can be so comforting. Though we may have our differences tribe, religion, educational background, upbringing, etc. we still have so much in common. Sometimes, you just want someone who gets your jokes without needing to explain. Being with people who really understand you who get your slang, your humor, your background is such a relief. It’s the comfort of discussing what’s happening back home what’s trending, what’s on the news, celebrity gossip, and so much more.
Moreover, having a close-knit group of fellow Nigerians can really make a difference. There will always be someone who’s faced a challenge similar to yours or one you might soon experience. If we all cooperate and show that sense of togetherness, we can share our experiences and save others from unnecessary struggles. We can ease their burdens and help them avoid a lifetime of trauma.
While this community may not completely erase homesickness, it certainly softens the impact. It creates a strong support system that helps you keep going. It’s unsettling to be in a foreign country where you sometimes feel a little out of place, but small gatherings, events, picnics, and just vibing together help balance that. Coming together to talk about what you’ve been through not only comforts you but also helps those around you. It assures them that they’re not alone. The feeling of being heard and listened to resonates in ways words can’t fully capture.
Whether we like it or not, we represent Nigeria wherever we are and we should act like proud Nigerians. One of the things I love about us is our protective spirit and loyalty to our roots. We should always be ready to support and represent anything that showcases Nigeria in a positive light. It’s who we are our identity and our responsibility. You don’t have to do too much just enough, in a sincere and impactful way, to leave an impression.
To cut the long story short: we all need to embrace the spirit of community and togetherness wherever we find ourselves. Connect, talk, work with people from your country — and from other countries too. Let go of the “I don leave Naija, I no get business with them again” mindset.
Together, we can achieve greater heights.
NAIJA FOR LIFE!
