Why I change my dorm every summer

This post is for YTB (scholarship) students only.

As you know, the scholarship provides dormitory accommodation to students.

When you first arrive, you’d be placed in a dorm.

For Undergraduate students, they would pay the dorm directly for your accommodation.

For Postgraduate students, they will only pay for the first year. Actually, till you finish your TÖMER.

Afterwards, you’d receive a monthly fee for accommodation. So you are expected to cater for your accommodation with that fee.

– Whether you decide to stay in the dorm or rent an apartment, you will have to pay yourself.

I am an undergraduate student studying in Ankara. I stay in a private dorm. Every summer, from July to Augustto be precise, we are always asked to move to a KYK dorm. Why exactly? I don’t know. But here’s what I know

1. Not all KYK dorms are open in summer. In Ankara, for guys, there are about 5 KYK dorms. In this summer, all students moved to “Tahsin Banguoglu”, the only KYK dorm that was open. So that means KYK keeps one dorm open at a time during summer

2. Students like me from private dorms also move to KYK. Not all of us though

3. A friend of mine staying in a Foundation dorm, was moved to another branch of his dorm. The Foundation had about 3 dorms. It closed 2 and moved the students to the 3rd one.

It is definitely a hustle moving from one place to another every year especially if you have a lot of stuff. So what you can do is only pack your summer clothes and all that you need and leave your unnecessary items like winter jackets and shoes in your dorm.

After all, you will move there for only 2 or 3 months at most.

I am still trying to figure out why this system is even in place. Maybe they use that time to do maintenance at those other dorms, or perhaps it is just easier to manage the few students left in 1 place since most people will have travelled back to their hometowns.

Nevertheless, now you know what to do if you are asked to move. Don’t stress too much and pack up wisely.

Dear Postgraduate students, take this into consideration before deciding to stay at the dorm you were placed in or rent an apartment.
